Chinese publishing company Tencent has announced that they have bought Turtle Rock Studios, the developer behind Back 4 Blood and Evolve. Turtle Rock’s parent company, Slamfire, joins an enormous list of gaming companies now owned on whole or in part by the Chinese gaming giant. It is the parent company of Riot Games, and has ownership stakes in Activision Blizzard, Ubisoft, Epic Games, and more. It is also the operator of China’s most popular social app, WeChat.
The announcement has confirmed that although this means that Tencent now owns Turtle Rock Studios, the studio will continue its independent operations from California with the same staff. Apparently, the acquisition will not affect the Back 4 Blood series. “We are all looking forward to joining the Tencent family of studios,” said Steve Goldstein, president of Turtle Rock Studios. “Tencent’s outstanding partners, global reach, deep knowledge of gaming and unprecedented support will help us create the kinds of ambitious games we dream of, while allowing us to retain our autonomy and independent spirit.”
Eddie Chan, Tencent’s Chief Strategy Officer, added, “We are huge fans of Turtle Rock games, especially their amazing approach to online collaborative game development. We can’t wait to see what’s next and we look forward to being part of their future.“
