It’s hard to believe, but Mario Kart 8 first came out an entire seven years ago in 2014. It was given new life on the Nintendo Switch as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which included all DLC from the original version, more playable characters, and various other upgrades. But even that was back in 2017, so it makes sense that it might be time for Nintendo to be thinking about Mario Kart 9. And that’s exactly the plan, as reported by a Gamesindustry.biz article.
The article mostly contains simple predictions for the year to come, however, video game analyst Dr Serkan Toto seems to have some inside knowledge that Mario Kart 9 is indeed in the works. Dr Toto works for Katan Games, which is a consultancy that focuses on the Japanese video game industry. While it isn’t clear how Dr Toto knows this for sure, he states that the game is being developed ‘with a new twist’, which is certainly an intriguing thing to hear. He doesn’t go any further into what exactly that means, but he predicts that Nintendo might officially reveal it as soon as this year.
While we haven’t seen a brand new mainline Mario Kart title in many years, that doesn’t mean Nintendo has been sleeping on the beloved kart racer. The mobile game Mario Kart Tour has maintained steady popularity since its release in 2019, and check out our review of Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, which allows you to create a real-life racetrack in your own home for Mario to race through.
