Sifu has only been out for a few days, and everyone agrees: this game is tough. Tough enough that it has once again reignited the age-old debate about difficulty in video games, with an equal number of reviews citing its crushing difficulty as a positive and a negative. Since difficulty is a subjective matter, many games implement easy or hard modes so the player can customise their own experience, but Sifu released without that option. However, it looks like Sifu will be introducing a number of accessibility options, including difficulty options.
This is confirmed by Steve Saylor, an accessibility advocate who previously consulted with Naughty Dog on The Last of Us Part 2’s accessibility options. On a stream hosted by Saylor, Sloclap co-founder Pierre Tarno discussed the studio’s plans to update their game.
Hey! So it's weird I get to help break news but yes #Sifu is getting #accessibility updates post-launch.
– Better captions
– High Contrast Mode on PS4/5 (was on PC, but not PS4/5 at launch due to a bug)
– Difficulty Modes. Both easier & harder, similar to Metroid Dread's update. https://t.co/9pFTOmfvnR— Steve Saylor (@stevesaylor) February 11, 2022
There’s no word on when we might see these updates in the game, but it’s good to know that Sifu might able to be enjoyed by anyone who so far has been turned off by the crushing difficulty. And for those who don’t need an easy mode, well, it looks like there’ll be an even harder mode.
Check out our review of Sifu, where we discussed how Sifu could benefit from just such accessibility options.
