GreedFall 2 announced for a 2024 release

French developer Spiders have today announced they are working on a sequel to their 2019 open-world RPG, GreedFall. A cinematic trailer has dropped alongside the announcement of GreedFall 2 with the game being a prequel of sorts, set 3 years before the events of the first game.

GreedFall 2: The Dying World is the full name of the project, with the game’s announcement trailer showcasing more of the beautiful natural world, the fantasy creatures found within, and a conflict between the traditional owners and a colonising force. It’s just a brief glimpse into the world of GreedFall 2 with no gameplay to be seen, but it’s still absolutely worth a look, especially for fans of the original.

The trailer’s description states that the game is “continuing the winning formula… an RPG that focuses on story and player choice, but with new gameplay features including more tactical combat.”

“Uprooted from the island of your birth, find your freedom by exploring the old continent and forging your destiny through alliances, scheming, and battle. It’s up to you to end one man’s ambitions of conquest, which could spell the end for the continent and your island.”

Back in our review of GreedFall, we said the title has “a lot of ambition”, comparing it to huge releases like Dragon Age and The Witcher 3, although ultimately falling short of those lofty aspirations. However, despite some shortcomings, we said that GreedFall “delivers a compelling setting, interesting characters and open-ended gameplay that will satisfy anyone looking to jump into another big role playing game”.

In GreedFall 2, the player will play as a native inhabitant fighting back against the colonists. It’s an exciting prospect with the prequel nature of the game allowing for a new kind of story to be told here. The continued focus on narrative and player choice is great, but I’m particularly excited to see if GreedFall 2’s new “tactical combat” will help to eleviate some of its predecessors weaker aspects.

The development team behind GreedFall and its prequel always feel like their coming up just short of making something brilliant, so it’ll be exciting to see what they can do once GreedFall 2 drops sometime in 2024.
