Insider rumours suggest that Sony is developing a new PS5 model with a detachable Blu-Ray disc drive. According to these reports, this PS5 model is planned to be released in a year’s time.
The report, by Insider Gaming, states that this new model of PS5 will be called the D chassis. It will be nearly identical to the current models on the market in terms of hardware, save for a detachable disc drive. The disc drive will be connected to the PlayStation 5 using an extra USB-C port on the back of the console. The disc drives will be able to be purchased separately, or as part of a bundle with the console.
Although as yet not officially confirmed by Sony, a model of the PlayStation 5 with an optional disc drive makes a good deal of sense. It would bridge the gap between the existing disc drive and digital only editions of the PS5 console. In addition, with the console recently experiencing a substantial price hike, selling the disc drive separately as an optional add-on would go some way to reducing production costs and make the console more affordable for the end user.
According to Sony, 21.7 million PS5 consoles have been shipped already, with the company anticipating the production of 18.5 million of the new PS5 model over the next financial year as materials become more readily available. If these reports end up being officially confirmed, this the D chassis PS5 is set to be released in September 2023, so in about a year’s time. Sony has yet to officially comment on the rumours, so we will have to wait and see what the future holds for the next PS5 variants going forward.
