The talented team from Thunderful Development, known for the SteamWorld series of games, have clearly been hard at work. Today we got to see the announcement of SteamWorld Build, a city-builder in the spirit of titles like Cities: Skylines, though with a very distinctive SteamWorld aesthetic.
The SteamWorld game series is known for an eclectic mix of genres, beginning with the mining platformer SteamWorld Dig back in 2013. Since then we’ve seen titles like SteamWorld Heist and SteamWorld Quest showcase the diversity and consistency of the Thudnerful development team. This is what fills us with so much faith that their next venture, SteamWorld Build, will be equally full of quality and charisma. Check out the announcement trailer below.
The unique aesthetic is instantly recognisable and helps differentiate the title from other, more realistic city-builders. The animations and designs all look top-notch, which is what gives this release so much potential. Possibly inspired by its SteamWorld Dig origins, you can also see how the above-ground city that you’re building into fruition is actually just the beginning of things, as underground caverns with mining robots help the player gather resources.
The game’s Steam page asks players to “Be the architect of a SteamWorld mining town! Break ground and raise houses for your steambot citizens, keep them fed and provide some rootin’-tootin’ entertainment.”
You can expect to see SteamWorld Build release across PC and consoles in 2023.
