Another day, another battle royale slay. Fortnite is once again refreshed and ready for a new season of outlandish wildness – Fortnite: Chapter 4 – Season 2: Mega is here! Embrace the new, neon-drenched metropolis on this island for a real surprise. After a season that wasn’t quite medieval, the future is here – check out the gameplay trailer below!
MEGA is interesting because it doesn’t quite explain what this season is. In the cinematic trailer, land masses begin to fall from the sky. It feels as though the title is a clever wink to the changes coming this season. While it’s only been a few days, this season has already given us much to enjoy. There’s even a familiar island that’s rifting in during the later phase of games, suggesting that the old zero point is up to its usual tricks! It seems like it’s not only Tears of the Kingdom that’s going to have floating islands…
MEGA changes
Sadly, the Fortnite Shockwave Hammer is gone but its replacement is very on-brand for this season. The Kinetic Blade is similar to the hammer by allowing players to travel quicker with a series of timed dashes and be a functional offensive weapon. If players get close enough to enemies they can cause damage with the dash attack before slicing and dicing. Be sure to pair this weapon with the ‘Dignified Finish’ augment that recharges the blade’s dash attack after eliminations. This will help if a squad catches you after a brash flank attack.
The weapon pool this season is a fairly standard shotgun and sniper meta that isn’t unfamiliar to veteran players. It has been interesting to see the very strong Overclocked Pulse Rifle as an AR option for the season. Other standouts for me have been the Havoc Pump Shotgun and Havoc Suppressed Assault Rifle for their durability in a loadout when in a squad of snipers and sword ambushes.
There was also a weapon teased that has a lock-on ability as seen in the trailer. It’s not yet available but I’m interested to see how the player base reacts.
Vehicles and mobility
Zoom, zoom! Bikes and cars have had a MEGA facelift and look much more like something out of Blade Runner – They look slick! You’ll also have noticed the grind rails. These are really fun and surprisingly easy to ride and fire weapons. They are only present at the MEGA City POI though which feels a little bit wasted.
There’s an Attack On Titan-themed traversal item coming later in the season. We’ll likely get this fantastic item when we can earn the Eren Jaeger skin as this season’s bonus cosmetics set.
Eight new cosmetic skins
It wouldn’t be a new Fortnite season without a fresh new roster of cosmetics to earn in the Battle Pass. Eight skins in total will be available to players who purchase the pass, as well as customisation options available for each of them. You’ll auto-unlock the fine-tailored “Renzo the Destroyer” and progress through the Battle Pass to unlock other outfits, including the streetwear savant “Thunder,” the elegantly casual “Highwire,” and more. My standout is certainly Stray because he’s a new version of player favourite Drift from all the way back in Chapter 1, Season 4! The new skin teases his new purpose in the omnipresent Fortniteverse.
MEGA is a big season, that’s for sure. With a lot to prove after an absolute ripper of a start to Chapter 4, I reckon we’re in good hands. One Attack on Titan skin could very well mean that we already know this season’s anime collab but it’s not a guarantee that we’ll see more. I am quietly hopeful that we’ll see some kind of easter event but as for everything else… we might just need to wait and see what other MEGA surprises are in store for players new and old.
Fortnite Chapter 4, Season 2 is available free to play now on basically everything.
