On the back of Sony’s State-of-Play livestream earlier this week, and an article from Bloomberg indicating that work on the anticipated untitled The Last of Us multiplayer game could be slowing down, Naughty Dog has announced it is working on a brand-new single-player experience while they continue to work on their multiplayer The Last of Us game.
After the State of Play finished without nary a peep from Naughty Dog, it seems fans began to wonder about the status of the multiplayer game Naughty Dog announced back at SummerFest 2022. To put their fans’ minds at ease, Naughty Dog released a statement on their official Twitter account explaining the current situation, while at the same time announcing that a new single-player game is in development.

Fans have been waiting for a Last of Us multiplayer mode ever since the original game in 2013, when a multiplayer mode was planned to be added. That mode as planned never happened, and while a similar mode was planned for Part II, it was then announced that the game would be released as a separate title. According to the Bloomberg article, some development effort has shifted from The Last of Us multiplayer game to other projects: is this new single-player game on of those projects? Only time will tell.
Sony’s State of Play was streamed on May 23 and featured titles such as a remake of Metal Gear 3: Snake Eater, Dragon’s Dogma 2, and Assassin’s Creed Mirage.
