Compulsion Games, known for the stylish 2018 survival release We Happy Few, have announced their next game during the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase. South of Midnight paints a dark and uniquely characterised world that looks deeply intriguing, even if the reveal trailer raises more questions than it answers. The Canadian video game developer may have bit off a bit more than they could chew with We Happy Few, however, they’ve now had 5 years under the Xbox banner after being officially acquired by Microsoft which means that perhaps this next release will have the resources to be something genuinely special.
The in-engine trailer gives us hints as to the visual style, some of the stylistic choices like deliberately low frames-per-second, and a glimpse at who we can assume is the game’s protagonist and the kind of supernatural monster-hunting adventures they may be going on. The trailer’s description calls South of Midnight “a fantastical and macabre third-person action-adventure set in the American Deep South.”
Unfortunately not a whole lot of detail was given about this release, with no gameplay in sight. Though we can expect the title to release across Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam when it releases. The title will also hit GamePass day one on console, PC and cloud.
