Janet DeMornay Is A Slumlord (and a witch) from Sydney-based Fuzzy Ghost got the spotlight at the recent Day of the Devs showcase.
Renting can be a nightmare in Australia, but what if your landlord is a witch in Sydney? That’s the premise of Janet DeMornay Is A Slumlord (and a witch). You play as Andrew, a resident in a queer sharehouse with a landlord whose supernatural abilities are obvious. The sharehouse is haunted and your landlord wants to know everything that you’re doing. From your location to your actions, you must report back to your landlord or things quickly get dicey. Soon, you realise that the landlord’s interest in you and lack of care for the house are related. Can you successfully escape the situation with your newfound family and possibly find another place to rent?
While the horror elements in the game are supernatural, they are inspired by real-life rental horror stories from other renters in Australia. Most landlords aren’t like Janet DeMornay who is an actual witch, but the game does its best to showcase the housing crisis in Australia. There’s a happy ending for the queers involved and it’s great to highlight how everyone handles the crisis in their own way. Have a few laughs, get scared, and empathise with each other about how we’re all in this together.
Janet DeMornay Is A Slumlord (and a witch) is available to wishlist on Steam.
