Evil Empire, a development team behind the 2018 roguelike Dead Cells, has announced that the upcoming updates 34 and 35, scheduled for later this year, will be the game’s last. In an announcement posted to Twitter/X, the team states that it will be closing the book on Dead Cells and starting development on a brand new title. In the statement, they say, “We’re extremely proud of our work on countless updates & DLC, but now it’s time for something shiny and new.” Just what this shiny and new project is, though, is still under wraps.
Hand in Hand with its main studio Motion Twin, Evil Empire has developed and released 5 expansions for Dead Cells, all well-received. The most recent expansion released just last year, partnering with Konami to deliver a new storyline set in the world of Castlevania.
Motion Twin released its own statement on the matter on the game’s Steam page, which explains how update 35 will be the game’s last content update. The announcement states, “Our commitment to avoiding the “more of the same” trap and keeping Dead Cells fresh and original has led us to this point… it’s crucial not to overextend and risk diminishing the unique charm that makes Dead Cells special to us all. ”
Motion Twin’s next game is Windblown, another roguelike that is due to release sometime this year. In the meantime, the studio will still be around for bugs and quality-of-life fixes on Dead Cells.
