Fresh off the heels of the release of the rather excellent live-action Fallout television series on Amazon Prime Video, Bethesda Game Studios has confirmed that 2015’s Fallout 4 is getting a free upgrade for current-gen consoles and PC. What’s more, it’s coming sooner than you might have expected.
Bethesda announced the details of this upgrade in an official blog post. The free update will include “native applications for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Performance mode and Quality mode settings, as well as stability improvements and fixes.” Players can also expect increased resolutions as well as up to 60 FPS gameplay. For those playing Fallout 4 on PS4 and Xbox One, those versions of the game will still receive stability improvements, as well as login and quest fixes. The upgraded versions of Fallout 4 will be free to download on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S for anyone who already owns the PS4 or Xbox One versions respectively.
In addition to the new versions of Fallout 4 available for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S players, the PC version will also be getting a boost. These updated features include widescreen and ultra-widescreen support, in addition to fixes to Creation Kit and a variety of quest updates. The versions of the game on Steam, Microsoft Store and GOG will be getting stability, mod and bug fixes. What’s more, Fallout 4 will finally be available for purchase on the Epic Games Store, along with being Steam Deck verified.
There are plenty of other free goodies being added in these updates from the Creation Club. These include Enclave weapon and armour skins, the Tesla Cannon, the Hellfire Power Armor, the X-02 Power Armor and the Heavy Incinerator. Furthermore, a variety of special weapons and armour will be made available as part of the Halloween Workshop and Makeshift Weapon Pack. Finally, a new quest called “Echoes of the Past” will be included, allowing players to encounter Enclave remnants and stop them from spreading their ideology in the Commonwealth.
This next-gen update was probably an inevitability following the success of the similar upgrade of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for current-gen systems a few years ago. It’s hard to argue with free stuff, and is the perfect excuse to dive back into the Commonwealth wasteland after you’ve watched the new TV series. The upgraded versions of Fallout 4 will be available for download on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC on April 25th 2024.
