Taking centre stage at the Xbox Games Showcase this morning was a new title from Melbourne development studio Beethoven & Dinosaur. Known for their 2021 release, The Artful Escape, which we gave top marks to in our review, this local studio has cemented itself as one to look out for. The upcoming game is called Mixtape and will focus on a group of 3 teens on their last night of high school. With Annapurna Interactive once again partnering up to publish, we can expect Mixtape to be an incredible adventure of self-discovery with beautiful visuals and voice acting, all emphasised by what they’re describing as “the soundtrack of a generation.”
With music from DEVO, Roxy Music, Lush, The Smashing Pumpkins, Iggy Pop, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, and more, there’s no doubt that Mixtape will be capturing a certain vibe. With developer Johnny Galvatron having an amazing history in the music industry, it’s no surprise that music has become the focal point of his video gaming craft. Rebellion, coming of age, and a hint of mystery is prominent in the game’s debut trailer. Check it out below.
Coming to Xbox and PC as well as Game Pass day one, Mixtape looks to be a title worth keeping an eye on. Our cast of characters aren’t just here to skate and listen to tunes, they’re also embarking on a soul-searching adventure through their own formative memories, with dreamlike vignettes showcasing those moments that will stick with them forever. It’s a powerful idea and one we can’t wait to discover more. Mixtape is set to release in 2025.
