Originally revealed this time last year, South of Midnight is a fantastical action game set in the swamplands of the American South. Now, during the Xbox Game Showcase event, the title has had its gameplay debut, showing us a bit more of what to expect from this intriguing release.
Developed by Compulsion Games who had made We Happy Few back in 2018, South of Midnight is really leaning into a unique setting and aesthetic. With deliberately low framerates, some incredible American Southern twang, and an undeniably fascinating folkloric world, there’s a lot to like about this idea.
The gameplay debut (seen above) showcases the title’s gameplay for the first time. This third-person action game looks to rely on reaction-based dodges and the ability to jump into the fray with fists of fury to deal damage to the world’s beasties. Perhaps even more exciting is some of the platforming and movement we got to watch, as our hero leaps and dashes through the world, pulling out what looks to be a magical paraglider and catching the wind to cover great distances.
South of Midnight looks like an absolutely fascinating release and one to keep on your radar. The game will be released to Xbox Series X|S and PC as well as Game Pass in 2025. Check the game out on Steam to find more information.
