Guerrilla Games and Sony have announced Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered during today’s PlayStation State of Play presentation. This remaster of Guerrilla Games’ celebrated 2017 post-apocalyptic open world action game will be heading to PC and PS5, bringing a significant amount of technical improvements and a fresh coat of paint on the original game.
As confirmed in the announcement trailer, this current-gen upgrade will bring with it higher fidelity graphics, with improved shaders and textures, as well as upgraded character models. As per the PlayStation Blog, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered will include the PS5’s DualSense controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive trigger features to make tasks such as drawing Aloy’s bow or scaling a Tallneck machine more immersive. Most notably, there will be 10 hours of cutscenes with re-recorded motion capture and redone camerawork to put the game on the same level of graphical fidelity as its sequel, Horizon Forbidden West.
The sound design in Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered will also see some improvements. The sound mix has been revamped, and will support PS5 Tempest 3D Audio Tech in order to provide a more immersive soundscape. The sound design overall, both during gameplay and cinematics, will include improvements across the board. The accessibility features implemented in Horizon Forbidden West, such as fully rebindable controls, haptic cues, and assist toggles will also be included in this release.
On PC, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered will come with a suite of exclusive features. These will include Trophy support and support for ultra-wide resolutions, along with other performance enhancements. The game will also have native support for the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro.
Fortunately, players will not be made to buy the whole game again just for a few new graphical bells and whistles. While the game will be purchasable separately, those who currently own Horizon Zero Dawn on PS4 or PC will be able to acquire the digital version of Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered for $9.99 USD, so probably around $15 in Australia. The remaster will also support saves from the base game, allowing owners of the base version to pick up where they left off in Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered. While a free upgrade would have been nice, at least providing a cheaper path to upgrade than buying the whole game again is better than nothing.
Horizon Zero Dawn will be available for purchase on October 31st 2024 on PC and PS5.
