Nearly five years after Netflix and Ubisoft first announced their partnership in October 2020, the Assassin’s Creed live-action series is officially moving forward. Netflix has now officially greenlit the project, confirming development is finally underway after the long wait.

Guiding the series are Emmy-nominated creators Robert Patino and David Wiener, who will serve as showrunners and executive producers. Both Patino and Wiener, long-time fans of the Assassin’s Creed franchise since its debut in 2007, emphasised their commitment to telling a story with substance beyond the parkour and thrills.
Naturally, this live-action Assassin’s Creed adaptation makes you think of 2016’s film adaptation of the series, which drew very mixed reactions from fans and critics alike. While the film was visually flashy, much of the disappointment stemmed from its uninteresting modern-day storyline and weak and underdeveloped characters. This time, Ubisoft and Netflix seem determined to chart a different course. Patino and Wiener shared in a joint statement that Assassin’s Creed “is about people searching for purpose, struggling with questions of identity and destiny and faith”.
They emphasise that, above anything else, their adaptation is about the value of human connection across cultures and time. Hopefully, with this firmly in mind, the Netflix series can succeed where Justin Kurzel’s film failed.
With two showrunners focusing on characters and connection beyond the spectacle of being an assassin, Netflix appears confident that this new adaptation will honour Assassin’s Creed’s legacy in a way that offers something enticing for both devoted fans and newcomers. With no mention of a projected release date, all we can do now is wait patiently.
