Announced during Gamescom Opening Night, Traveller’s Tales has revealed their next Lego game. Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is an open-world action-adventure which is slated for a 2026 release. Similar to TT’s last Lego game The Skywalker Saga, this new title revives a classic Lego series with an all-new gameplay style.
Legacy of the Dark Knight doesn’t follow the linear level structure of the original Lego Batman. Yet, it’s not branching out to focus on the wider Justice League like the later games did either. Instead, this newest Lego Batman is surprisingly reminiscent of the beloved Arkham video games. The website details all of Legacy of the Dark Knight’s mechanics, such as stealth, combat and exploration.
The reveal trailer gave fans a healthy dose of gameplay. Players can explore an expansive Gotham City by freely gliding or driving the Batmobile. Combat uses a fast paced melee combo system which causes criminals to hilariously explode into Lego bits. Batman can also sneak up on unsuspecting criminals by prowling rooftops and using his trusty detective vision. The trailer even features some very specific gadgets such as the iconic bat-shaped explosive gel.
This is the third spiritual successor to the Arkham franchise, following Gotham Knights & Suicide Squad. Although this is by far the most unexpected entry yet. Of course, Legacy of the Dark Knight is borrowing DNA from various modern Batman stories, such as the newer movies.
The trailer features snippets of iconic villains such as Joker and Bane, who are reminiscent of the Christopher Nolan films. Bane’s voice, provided by the hilarious Matt Berry, is a garbled affair that clearly spoofs Tom Hardy’s performance. Similarly, a car chase featuring the Penguin is a clear homage to the same scene in Matt Reeve’s Batman film.
Despite these allusions, Legacy of the Dark Knight promises an original story that focuses on facing Batman’s foes and building up his allies. The next Lego Batman will release sometime next year, and is currently available to wishlist on Steam.
