Bubsy the bobcat is back in Bubsy 4D (yes, really)

Posted on August 20, 2025

Well, nobody had this one on their bingo card. During Gamescom 2025, ATARI resurrected Bubsy, its orange bobcat mascot that hasn’t been seen since the woefully bad Bubsy 3D in 1996. In a trailer that lampshades its infamously bad previous release, Bubsy trades the outdated t-shirt for a smart blaser and tie, possibly in reference to the fact that Bubsy, like his fans, is now in his thirties. And yes, this is really happening: it’s Bubsy 4D, baby!

Bubsy 4D is being developed by Fabraz, the team behind Demon Turf, a 3D platformer collectathon that seems to be in the ballpark that ATARI is aiming for with Bubsy. The trailer shows Bubsy running around and jumping to collect balls of yarn, tackling platforming challenges, and even turning into a big round furball. In true Bubsy fashion, he has a lot to say about all of it.

There’s something to be said about laughing at yourself; now that ATARI has put the spotlight on the infamous failure of Bubsy 3D with this trailer (and obviously its name), now it’s harder to take that cheap shot against them. However, that will only take the orange bobcat so far. We’ll have to see whether Bubsy’s new game will redeem him or doom him to another twenty years of mockery.

Bubsy 4D is listed as ‘coming soon’ to PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, and PC.
