Ron Gilbert, the prolific creator of Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion, has revealed his new game, Death by Scrolling, at Gamescom 2025’s opening night.
Departing from Gilbert’s usual puzzle adventures, this new venture is a pixel-art roguelike vertically scrolling RPG where the player kills enemies and collects gold while avoiding the borders of the screen and the Grim Reaper long enough to pay for their trip to the afterlife. The game is being published by Micropose and is being developed by Gilbert’s studio Terrible Toybox. Terrible Toybox’s most recent games include Return to Monkey Island and Thimbleweed Park.
Death by Scrolling’s release date is currently unknown, but it can now be wishlisted on Steam.
