Another year means new PlayStation 2025 console exclusives for us to get our little gamer mitts onto! So what’s in store for one of the gaming industry’s biggest players through this year and beyond? Let’s dive in so that you can mark your calendars and get hyped accordingly!
Ghost Of Yotei
Release Date: 2025 TBA
The sequel to Sony’s acclaimed 2020 hit Ghost of Tsushima, this title is arguably the most anticipated exclusive for PlayStation in 2025. However, whilst Tsushima was set during the Mongol period of Japan, Yotei is set 300 years after in 1603, the beginning of the Edo period. Also, the main protagonist is a female named Atsu who is using the Ghost persona whilst traversing around the game’s new location – modern-day Hokkaido. Based on all the information we know, and the fact that Ghost of Yotei is the first Sucker Punch Productions game to be built completely for the PlayStation 5, it’s (hopefully!) safe to say that it will be a worthy successor to its predecessor.
Death Stranding 2: On The Beach
Release Date: 2025 TBA
Death Stranding 2 is another Sony exclusive sequel releasing in 2025. As a Kojima Production, this is bound to have a number of differing opinions once it’s released. Kojima has not released a lot of information about the sequel, though the synopsis states that Sam, (played once again by The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus) will have companions by his side as they encounter “otherworldly enemies, obstacles and a haunting question: Should we have connected?”
Where Winds Meet
Release Date: 2025 TBA
Where Winds Meet is a massive open-world game that promises a single-player or four-player online 100+ hour Wuxia RPG adventure. Set in Ancient China during the tenth century, you can also customise your character and have the ability to choose your fighting style and weapons. If devs Everystone Studios can bring all these elements together we’re looking at one beefy, exciting RPG experience!
The Midnight Walk
Release Date: 2025 TBA
From the Lost In Random devs comes a handcrafted, stop-motion clay world where you play as The Burnt One and Potboy, two misfit creatures who have to make their way through a “nightmarish highway” where they need to survive five different tales that centre around fire. It all seems very mysterious and creepy and is also coming to PS VR2!
Ballad of Antara
Release Date: 2025 TBA
A free-to-play title, Ballad of Antara is an RPG set across two worlds – that of the ‘normal’ world and that of a mysterious world where weird creatures and events occur labelled “Para.” You can play as many different characters throughout your single-player run-through or be joined by up to three players online. Developers Tipsworks Studio have also said they will continue to deliver post-launch content once the game is released sometime this year.
Marathon
Release Date: TBA
Based on a Mac OS 1994-1996 release, this was Bungie’s big IP before they had huge hits with Halo and Destiny. Playing as cybernetic mercenaries called Runners, players will battle others in PvP extraction shooter style for the riches in the distant world of Tau Ceti IV. We haven’t heard much about Marathon since it was announced in 2023, but seeing as this is Bungie’s first new release in nearly ten years and the trailer above looks wicked, fans are eagerly awaiting any new updates!
Phantom Blade Zero
Release Date: TBA
Announced in 2023, Phantom Blade Zero is another Wuxia RPG, but this one incorporates elements of steampunk, or in this case, ‘kungfupunk.’ The premise is you play as a warrior who has 66 days left to live and it is up to you how you choose to spend these last days. Will you seek revenge on those who have wronged you or, instead, embrace life?
Sword of the Sea
Release Date: TBA
From the developers behind hits Abzu, the Pathless and Journey comes Sword of the Sea – an absolutely gorgeous-looking world of a forgotten realm where your protagonist slides around the terrain on a Hoversword. This Hoversword works as a hoverboard/skateboard/snowboard hybrid and will help you explore the mysteries of this abandoned world.
Baby Steps
Release Date: TBA
Baby Steps is the story of a 35-year-old male protagonist who lives in his parent’s basement and obviously has not touched grass in a while. Somehow he is teleported from the safety of his parent’s home out into different worlds and terrains. The only problem is, because he has been a sedentary creature for so long, you can literally only take one step at a time with him, making this a pretty funny premise for a walking simulator.
Intergalactic
Release Date: TBA
Naughty Dog fans rejoiced when Intergalactic was revealed at the 2024 Game Awards, even though the studio has been working on this new IP since 2020. Players embody Jordan A. Mun, a bounty hunter who has found herself stranded on the planet Sempiria. Jordan will need to use all her abilities to be the first person to leave Sempiria in over 600 years. What makes this extra awesome is that award-winning musicians Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, of Nine Inch Nails fame but also more recently developing soundtracks for such movies as Challengers and Queer, will be producing the game’s score. It is doubtful that we will see this release for PlayStation in 2025, but we’re excited as hell anyway.
Marvel’s Wolverine
Release Date: TBA
It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything official about Marvel’s Wolverine game, though there have been many leaks that have given players some understanding of the game’s current state. Insomniac, the studio behind the amazing Spider-Man games are at the helm here so there’s a lot of excitement and anticipation for this one.
New PlayStation handheld
With the release of the PlayStation Portal in February of last year, there have been many rumours that PlayStation has a handheld gaming device in the works that will go up against so many competitors, the most obvious being the Nintendo Switch.
Rumours ramped up when via the PlayStation blog, Sony announced a major update for the Portal in November, 2024. PlayStation Premium Members who own the device are now able to cloud stream up to 120 PS5 games even without owning a PS5 console – but not in Australia, yet. This has led many to believe that Sony is working on their own standalone console handheld. Will it be released in 2025? Probably not, but we may hear more about what to expect and potentially even a release date this year.
PlayStation in 2025 is shaping up to be a year for sequels, open-world adventures and RPGs, with room for some surprises. Be sure to keep on checking back for the latest updates as they happen.
