Sonic2020 marks a big year for the blue blur!

Posted on January 21, 2020

There’s never been a better time to be feeling blue! SEGA have rung in the new year by announcing Sonic2020, a year full of Sonic announcements and treats for fans! Forget hype trains, we’re gonna need some sneakers!

Sonic2020, the year of Sonic!

So what exactly is Sonic2020? Basically, on the 20th of every month this year, SEGA will be sharing new information and projects all about our favourite spikey boy! Each announcement will be shared on the Sonic Channel here, and to start things off they’ve shared some lovely new wallpapers and artwork for us to gawk at with wonder and excitement (as demonstrated above, thanks Sonic).

Now, what can we expect from Sonic2020? While not everything is guaranteed to make it worldwide, I think we have some reasonable predictions to make here. For starters, we have the famously divisive Sonic the Hedgehog film coming next month, so it’s a safe bet that we’ll be seeing some merch revealed for the upcoming release. Maybe a plushie holding a heart to mark the day? I’ll buy it (probably several times, don’t judge me).

Another likely candidate is the Sonic at the Olympic Games mobile title, which is set to release in Spring this year. The move to mobile feels like a natural progression from the earlier DS and 3DS titles; no more scratching the touch screen trying to break 100m world records!

The road to the big 30!

And I’ve saved the possible best for last: next year marks the 30th anniversary of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, so Sonic2020 would be the perfect time to reveal the next big title in the series!

The 10th anniversary was marked by the release of Sonic Adventure 2, a (mostly) still-beloved Dreamcast title that saw the introduction of mainstays like Shadow and Rouge, while the 20th anniversary was celebrated with Sonic Generations, which is considered one of the best modern entries in the series to this day. Conversely, the 15th anniversary saw the release of Sonic 06, and the 25th had Sonic Forces. So if this pattern of great to not-so-great releases holds true, this next game will actually be good!

I for one am pumped to see what the year holds for our pointy pal, and will be sure to keep you updated for any big news that comes out of the pipeline. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go play some more Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles; that never gets old, no matter how many birthdays Sonic has.
