Sony reveals initial lineup of downloadable games for new PlayStation Plus tiers

Next month, Australia is getting two new tiers of PlayStation Plus subscription, allowing access to a library of PS1, PSP, PS4 and PS5 games. Sony has now announced the list of games that will be available for download, as well as a deal with Ubisoft expanding the number of titles available.

For players on the PlayStation Plus Essentials tier, their experience will not change much from how it is now. Subscribers will get access to two free games per month, as well as discounts and access to online multiplayer.

For PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers, they will have access to the following PS4 and PS5 games:

Ubisoft has also announced that it is incorporating a version of Ubisoft Plus, its own Game Pass-esque subscription service, into PlayStation Plus. Subscribers to PlayStation Plus Extra and Deluxe tiers will have access to Ubisoft games including Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla and The Crew 2.

For players in Australia, we will not have the PlayStation Plus Premium tier, with its inclusion of streamable PS3 games. We will have PlayStation Plus Deluxe, which will include the following list of PSP and PS1 games available for download, including some remasters:

Another factor to keep in mind is that players who have previously purchased the digital version one of these PS1 or PSP games in the past will not need to subscribe to PlayStation Plus to play these titles on PS4 or PS5. When these titles are released for PS4 and PS5, players can download a version for the consoles at no extra cost if they already own the digital version. Some of the titles will also be available for individual purchase.

In addition to these options, PlayStation Plus Deluxe subscribers will have access to time-limited game trials of new games. You can play these games for up to two hours for free, and any game or trophy progress can carry onto the full game. The games that will have trials available for subscribers at launch include:

Admittedly, the list isn’t as exhaustive as it could have been; there are plenty of iconic PS1 and PSP games excluded from this collection. The lack of PS2 games (aside from remasters) is also a bit strange, considering that console’s giant library. Furthermore, the inclusion of time-limited trials is not going to eclipse Xbox Game Pass’ convenience of getting to play all of Halo Infinite from day one. However, the library of available games for download will be refreshed in the middle of each month. As such, it is worth checking in on the library every few weeks to see if the list has been expanded.

The new PlayStation Plus tiers will become available for Australian players on June 23rd 2022.
