We’ve been pretty excited to give Forspoken a spin since it was first announced, and despite being delayed from its 2022 release date, the newest gameplay trailer shown off as part of Gamescom shows us a lot more detail about what we can expect from the magic-wielding open world action RPG.
The new gameplay footage provides a deeper look into some of the areas they will encounter in Athia, including Cipal “the last remaining haven where the surviving Athians take refuge from the devastating Break, a powerful force that corrupts everyone and everything it touches.” Cipal serves as a key hub for Frey as she can pick up quests, chat with residents, and trade goods in preparation for her journey across the corrupted land.
Beyond that, we get to see Frey naivating the large open world, fighting off different enemies with a range of magical combat skills. Each battle looks pretty and fantastical, with a lot of elemental powers coming into play. It looks fast and frantic, but also very satisfying. Combined with the way you’re able to traverse the environment by using enhanced parkour (ie; flying and zipping around with a grappling hook and surfboard made of air?), Forspoken seems to offer some slick action whether you’re fighting or just exploring.
We also get a glimpse of some of the secrets you can uncover in the world, including crafting mechanics and an upgrade system. It does seem to use a bit of an open world template that we’ve seen often in terms of uncovering the map and finding goodies, and some of the dialogue and character animations when interacting with NPC’s feels a little stilted, but there seems to be more than enough great components here to make Forspoken stand out from the crowd.
We won’t have long to wait before we find out for ourselves; Forspoken will launch on PS5 and PC on January 24, 2023.
