Proof that you can do just about anything with a public domain property if you have enough imagination, Lies of P is the upcoming gritty soulslike action-RPG based on Carlo Collodi’s Pinocchio, developed by Neowiz. A new gameplay reveal trailer has shown off some of Pinocchio’s moves and the foes he will be facing, as well as confirming the game’s release date. There is also a free demo out now on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S for players to experience the game for themselves ahead of release.
In Lies of P, you play as the famous puppet Pinnochio, who has been drawn to the city of Krat by a mysterious voice. Krat has been befallen by madness and strange monsters, and Pinocchio must fight to survive. To get by, Pinnochio can utilise a range of weapons and swappable Legion Arms, which grant him special abilities. The game’s setting is inspired by the Belle Époque fashion and architecture of late 19th century Europe, with a not-insignificant sprinkling of Bloodborne‘s edge and gameplay. The foes Pinocchio will face are also suitably macabre, ranging from clockwork kings to giant spiders to terrifying steampunk zombies.
Fittingly for a game based on Pinocchio, the player is also faced with situations where they must choose to lie or tell the truth. Whether or not Pinnochio has been honest or deceitful can lead to different endings depending on these choices. Players can experience it themselves with the free demo, which is currently available to download.
Whatever your thoughts on this interpretation of Pinnochio, it’s probably not the weirdest game based on a public domain property coming out in the near future if Winnie’s Hole is anything to go by. Lies of P is now available for preorder, and those who purchase it this way will also unlock the Mischievous Puppet’s Clothes and Parade Hat as preorder bonuses. The game has been confirmed to be releasing on September 19th 2023 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass as well.
