Melbourne’s very own Super Mario Bros. Tram!

Posted on September 29, 2023

In a delightful twist that has put a smile on the faces of us all travelling into the Melbourne CBD, Mario and his friends have embarked on a whimsical journey around the city aboard the Super Mario Bros. Wonder Tram, fleet number 3012, which currently operates as route 48. The tram livery has been magically transformed into a colourful work of art, captivating the hearts of passengers and onlookers alike.

This enchanting tram art arrives just in time to celebrate the upcoming release of Nintendo’s highly anticipated game, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which is set to hit the Nintendo Switch worldwide on 20 October 2023. As Mario, Luigi, and the gang prepare for a new adventure, Melbourne is already basking in the nostalgic glow of its favourite Italian plumber.

In Super Mario Bros. Wonder, you’ll be able to play multiple different characters from the Mario franchise, including Luigi, Toad, Princess Peach, Princess Daisy and Yoshi. Additionally, Nintendo has invented a new power-up that allows Mario to transform into Elephant Mario. Now we just need an Elephant Mario versus Bowser moment to really get us excited.

The timing is just right as gamers from around Australia converge into the Melbourne CBD for the annual PAX Australia during Melbourne International Games Week, running Monday 2 October 2023 until that Sunday. The massive gaming convention takes over the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) for the period of Friday 6 October to Sunday 8 October. Some of this year’s highlights involve Nintendo returning to the expo hall with Super Mario Wonder on show, of course, as well as Bethesda helping PAX Aus celebrate its 10th year with painting and other festivities. Of course, always a highlight is the PAX Rising section with this year’s Indie Showcase winners looking absolutely stunning.

We are also be returning to the convention with our very own booth and giveaways, once again. We’ll set up a booth in the PAX Together Lounge and walk the expo halls, chatting with developers and playing games that we can share with our web and broadcast audiences. Come say hi between tram spotting and pin collecting (we have those, too).

So, whether you’re a lifelong Mario fan, a seasoned gamer attending PAX Australia, or simply a curious commuter looking for a bit of whimsy on your daily tram ride, don’t miss the chance to hop aboard the Super Mario Bros. Wonder Tram. Melbourne’s streets have never been more colourful, and the city’s love for gaming has never been more evident.
