Greedfall 2: The Dying World to initially launch in Early Access

Greedfall 2: The Dying World, the sequel to Spiders’ 2019 RPG which was announced last year will be initially launching in Early Access, according to a developer livestream. This release model has been chosen so that the developers can rely on player feedback, as well as test reactions to the game’s revamped combat system.

In a recent livestream transcribed by PC Gamer, producer Reda Isber explained the decision to release Greedfall 2 in Early Access. “Greedfall 2 is certainly a much more ambitious game than the first one,” he explained, “And so Early Access seemed like the right path to take. We’re relying heavily on Early Access to collect player feedback and see if we’re heading in the right direction.”

The updated combat system of Greedfall 2, in which the player has fine control over their whole party, not just the player character, also played a part in the decision to launch in Early Access. “It’s not turn-based, but you still have this kind of control over your team,” advised Spiders CEO Jehanne Rousseau. “And for this specific reason, having the feedback of the player was something that was super important because it’s something new. We never did these type of controls before.”

The Early Access version initially available will reportedly give players access to the “entire beginning” of the game. It is not unlikely that last year’s fantasy RPG phenomenon Baldur’s Gate 3, which also spent a lengthy period in Early Access and released each act as the game developed during that process, played some part in this decision to release Greedfall 2 in a similar fashion. Notably, the developers caution players seeking to jump onto the game in Early Access that “saves won’t be compatible between the various updates“, meaning several restarts as the game is progressively overhauled may be required.

Spiders’ still seems confident of the projected 2024 release window for Greedfall 2: The Dying World. The game is set to release in Early Access in Q3 2024 for an undetermined period ahead of a full release later on.
