Sul Sul movie fans! It has been announced that The Sims franchise will be given a chance to move from our computers to the big screen. This adds another popular video game IP to the list of movie adaptations, and hopefully, it does well because it seems Margot Robbie’s production company will be involved.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, LuckyChap will be producing the upcoming film. This production company was behind notable titles, such as Birds of Prey, Promising Young Women, and Barbie, so hopefully the film is in good hands. It has also been confirmed that Kate Herron, known for her works in Sex Education, Loki, and soon, The Last of Us: Season 2, will be directing this movie. It has also been reported that The Sims‘ publisher, Electronic Arts, will be involved in a “creative and producing capacity.” At the moment, details about this video game adaptation remain hidden. The film’s official name has yet to be released, as well as a scheduled release date, and a potential plot.
The Sims is a popular life simulation game that was first released in 2000. Since then, it has 4 main-game instalments, a mobile app, and a spin-off title called Sims Medieval. The game allows you to create an in-game avatar and tell their story through various activities. The game also comes with DLC that adds new content to the game, such as a weather system, pets, more family interactions, etc. Electronic Arts has announced The Sims 5 via codename: Project Rene. The company has showcased a demo of the game back in 2023 and the release date has yet to be announced.
This isn’t the first time The Sims was announced to have a live-action adaptation. Reuters reported in 2007 that 20th Century Fox bought the movie rights for the popular video game franchise. Meanwhile, Gamespot reported that Minions screenwriter, Bryan Lynch will be writing this adaptation. Unfortunately, the production for this project didn’t come to fruition due to the Disney acquisition.
It will be interesting to see how a Sims movie would come to life, especially since it’s pretty much a free-for-all. Although, the game does have lore that’s scattered across the objects you purchase and the backstories of your neighbours. So perhaps that might be a good place to start when it comes to a potential plot. Better hope those writers and potential cast members brush up on their Simlish dictionaries because they’re gonna need it. Maybe cast the actual celebrities who took the time to learn the language, like Katy Perry and My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way. Just like the game, this film adaptation has endless possibilities on how it would go down.
