Pokémon Sleep Championship Tournament announced on April Fools Day

Posted on April 1, 2024

Are you a heavy sleeper? Do you like Pokémon? Do you have what it takes to be the very best sleepy trainer in the world? Well, good news, The Pokémon Company has announced the first Pokémon Sleep Championship Tournament, a global event where you can prove that you’re the best sleeper in the world. Just try to take the news with a grain of salt once you consider the date this news came out.

A video was uploaded on the official Pokémon YouTube channel, where it showcased a competition against 5 trainers, fighting (or in this case, sleeping) for the ultimate trophy of the World Pokémon Sleep Champion. Trainers enter booths and have to sleep up to a minimum of 8 hours and 30 minutes with the Pokémon Sleep app tracking their progress. Seems simple, but if you’re distracted by the bright lights and anticipation, snuggling in bed is harder than it looks.

While the competition isn’t real, there is a chance that it could be. For starters, sleeping competitions actually exist. The World Sleep Championships is an official “sleep racing” event where the first person to fall asleep wins. According to Fatigue Management and Sleep Solutions Australia, the last event was in 2021. Meanwhile, CNN reported that Montenegro held its “Laziest Person” competition last year, where people had to lie down and be as slothful as they could and not stand up. Lastly, Australian comedians and radio presenters, Hamish and Andy, held a sleeping competition of their own called “Race To Sleep,” where one of them had to be the first to fall asleep and were able to distract their opponents to hinder their progress. So while The Pokémon Company may see this idea as a joke, evidence shows that this could become reality.

Pokémon Sleep is the latest Pokémon spin-off where you research Pokémon sleeping habits. As of writing, trainers can find up to a total of 506 different sleep styles from 129 Pokémon. Currently, there is a special event ongoing where trainers have a chance to get Johto’s legendary Pokémon, Raiku, to join their team. Trainers have also recently received a special gift to commemorate the announcement of the Pokémon Sleep 2024 Championship Tournament

Pokémon Sleep is now available to download on the App Store and Google Play Store.
