Magic: The Gathering announces official Hatsune Miku collab

Posted on May 2, 2024

J-pop fans, rejoice! Magic: The Gathering has announced an official collaboration with Hatsune Miku in an upcoming Secret Lair release. ‘Sakura Superstar’ will be part of the upcoming 2024 Spring Superdrop, along with other sets that have yet to be announced.

According to the official MTG Secret Lair account on X (formerly Twitter), this collaboration will feature six cards that showcase the popular Vocaloid. While many of the cards are reprints, each of them contains a unique art style of the virtual artist. These cards include:

  • Miku’s Spark (Chandra’s Ignition)
  • Harmonize
  • Inspiring Vantage
  • Miku, Lost by Singing (Azusa, Lost but Seeking)
  • Miku, the Renowned (Feather the Redeemed)
  • Shelter.

This isn’t the first time Hatsune Miku was featured in Magic: The GatheringBack in 2022, Vocaloid producer, Mwk, released the song ‘Connected’ which featured Miku’s vocals, for an official Magic: The Gathering promo for ‘Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. The music video for this collab also featured the virtual artist in this Cyberpunk/Japanese-inspired world. At the time, this sparked excitement from fans, claiming that Miku could be featured in a future collab as Wizards of the Coast had announced the year prior about its ‘Universes Beyond’ sub-brand, where existing IPs can receive their own MTG releases, like Assassin’s Creed and The Lord of the Rings. It’s important to note that this Hatsune Miku drop isn’t part of Universes Beyond.

Magic: The Gathering x Hatsune Miku: Sakura Superstar will be released on 13 May 2024 on the official MTG Secret Lair website.
