Black Myth: Wukong wins Game of the Year at the 2024 Steam Awards

The 2024 Steam Awards have concluded, with Game Science’s Black Myth: Wukong winning the coveted Game of the Year Award along with two other categories. With Black Myth: Wukong having won three awards in a single Steam Awards ceremony, this eclipses the records previously set by Cuphead and Baldur’s Gate 3, which each won only two Steam Awards in their respective years. While no other game won more than one award this time around (the Steam Awards having only 11 categories, vs the Game Awards‘ 29 different awards up for grabs), there were still some surprises in which games were winners.

Compared to The Game Awards, which are selected via a mixture of a jury comprised of media outlet figures along with public fan votes, the Steam Awards are voted on exclusively by Steam users. This probably explains why Black Myth: Wukong, a title which was overlooked at the Game Awards but had the second-highest number of concurrent players ever when it released as per Steamdb, was so successful.

The fact that the nominees are exclusively games which have released on Steam this year has resulted in some unconventional victors, such as Red Dead Redemption (which originally released 14 years on console but came out on PC this year) and several pre-2024 titles which received recent PC ports, such as Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon Forbidden West, receiving nominations.
