Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is getting a second season

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the Studio TRIGGER-produced anime prequel to CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 video game, was an engaging surprise when it released on Netflix back in 2022. Telling a mostly standalone tale of an up-and-coming mercenary in Night City, the 10-episode series was well-received, but also quite self-contained, with an ending that didn’t leave many avenues to continue its narrative. Despite this, Netflix, CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger are reconvening for another season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which has now started production.

Warning: the below announcement trailer has a tonne of spoilers for the ending of the first season.

David’s dead. But Night City lives on.” states the announcement trailer for the new season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. According to the social media post announcing the new season, it is described as “a new standalone 10-episode story from the world of Cyberpunk 2077— a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge.” The official Cyberpunk website confirms that the second season will be helmed by Kai Ikarashi, with Kanno Ichigo as lead character designer and Hugo Award winner Bartosz Sztybor and Masahiko Otsuka returning as writers.

Night City is a rich setting with plenty of stories to tell, so it’s exciting news that Studio TRIGGER is returning with a new season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The last season was so well received that it had a measurable impact on player numbers of Cyberpunk 2077, which at the time had yet to receive its major 2.0 gameplay update alongside the Phantom Liberty expansion.

With a full video game sequel in the works alongside some sort of live-action project, a new season of Edgerunners might be just what the ripperdoc ordered to tide over fans until we receive new information about those other works. The new season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is currently in production, with no release window or date confirmed as of yet.
