New Ghost Recon game reportedly in development

Posted on July 19, 2025

In a not-so-loud corner of a recent shareholder meeting, Ubisoft president Yves Guillemot dropped a bombshell that a new Ghost Recon game is in development. It’s been a quiet few years for the tactical shooter series, with the last major release being Ghost Recon Breakpoint back in 2019.

But now, the ghosts are gearing up for another mission and it might be very different for the series. Details are light, but the next Ghost Recon might go full first-person. Ubisoft’s CFO Frédérick Duguet casually referred to it as one of their “first-person-shooter-type games”. The franchise has been primarily third-person for nearly two decades. A full FPS pivot would be a huge departure and possibly a much-needed refresh.

After the open-world Wildlands surprised everyone with its solid co-op fun in 2017, Breakpoint followed in 2019 with loot mechanics, a confusing story, and a less-than-warm welcome. Ubisoft even tried to mix things up with NFTs in Breakpoint, which obviously didn’t go over well, and briefly chased the battle royale trend with Ghost Recon Frontline. That game was announced in 2021… and quietly cancelled in 2022 after fan backlash.

Safe to say: Ubisoft’s recent Ghost Recon experiments haven’t exactly hit the mark. But this new game might be their attempt at course correction. It sounds like the company is taking lessons from Rainbow Six Siege, the live-service juggernaut that continues to draw a large crowd. Will the new Ghost Recon game maintain the careful tactical balance it’s known for, or will it lean more toward action-heavy shooter territory? With the success of Siege over the last decade, Ubisoft may avoid that territory and focus on an action experience.

So far, there’s no official title, no trailers, and no release date. Guillemot and Duguet’s comments suggest that the game is still in early development, meaning we probably won’t be seeing it anytime soon.

Still, this quiet confirmation is enough to get fans cautiously excited. We’ll keep watching and hoping that this time the ghosts come back stronger than ever.
