Cyberpunk 2077 is finally getting its long-awaited (and long-delayed) paid DLC with the Phantom Liberty expansion. Notably, the DLC is skipping the PS4 and Xbox One, a final acknowledgement that the last-gen consoles were not really built to handle Cyberpunk 2077 in the first place. The game is also getting some free DLC to accompany the release of the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime series on Netflix.
The rather ominous teaser trailer shows protagonist V swearing an oath to the New United States of America. Johnny Silverhand, the charismatic rock star freedom fighter played by Keanu Reeves, comments at the end that this is a bad idea. The trailer is otherwise light on story and gameplay reveals, but it appears to be introducing new characters and areas. Details regarding its pricing and a firm release date have yet to be announced.
The end of the trailer shows that this premium expansion will only be heading to PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5 next year. Considering how poorly the Cyberpunk 2077 base game ran on last-gen consoles, it is perhaps understandable that the developers have decided to focus on current-gen development. Players on the last-gen versions may understandably feel left out, however at least last-gen owners can redeem a free next-gen upgrade if they have a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S.
In addition to this announcement, both the last-gen and current-gen versions of Cyberpunk 2077 will be getting some free additional content as part of Ver. 1.6. The update, released to commemorate the upcoming Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime, premiering on September 13th 2022.
The update will introduce some new cosmetic options, such as being able to independently set your appearance and armour stats. Some additional gigs, guns and melee weapons will also be added. A cross-progression save feature has been included too, allowing players to carry progress between versions. This update will be the last one released for the PS4 and Xbox One versions as CD Projekt Red shifts development exclusively to the newer, more powerful platforms.
The Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty expansion will release in 2023 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
