CD Project Red has announced that a “live-action project” based on its hit video game Cyberpunk 2077 is in the works. The project, whatever form it may take, is being made in collaboration with Anonymous Content, the media company behind acclaimed shows and films such as True Detective, Mr. Robot, and The Revenant.
“The new project is at an early development stage and has currently commenced searching for a screenwriter to tell a brand-new story set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077,” states CD Projekt Red in a press release. “The project will be developed in close collaboration with the Cyberpunk 2077 creative team. More information about the project will be made available as the partnership between Anonymous Content and CD Projekt Red progresses.”
Cyberpunk 2077, itself based on a classic tabletop RPG, has already been adapted into the well-regarded Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime on Netflix. The game and anime have already featured some big name film and TV actors, such as Keanu Reeves, Idris Elba and Giancarlo Esposito. There is no confirmation if the events of the game will be adapted, or if any of these big-name actors will be reprising their roles. Although the Cyberpunk tabletop game was itself inspired by classic 1980s science fiction, such as Blade Runner and Hardwired, the setting has enough of a unique flavour in its visuals and weird Night City future-slang to likely have a good chance of standing out in live-action.
Considering the game’s troubled beginnings back in 2020, it is hard to believe that things have progressed to a stage where the game is still popular enough to spawn more adaptations and spin-offs. However, after around $80 million reportedly spent on improving the game and developing its fantastic Phantom Liberty expansion, the tables have turned. The game has since seen a surge in sales following the recent massive 2.0 update.
Things seem quite early days with this Cyberpunk 2077 live-action project. At this stage, it appears key creatives are still being sourced, and it is unclear if it will take the form of a film or series. The Witcher Netflix adaptation has seen moderate success, regardless of who is playing the titular character next season. It will likely set expectations, either positive or negative, for CD Projekt Red’s next live-action adaptation. Partnering with a media company with a strong track record of well-written, mature projects like Anonymous Content will hopefully ensure a high-quality adaptation. We will have to wait and see how it turns out when more news is released at a later date.
