The live-action film adaptation of Gearbox’s Borderlands franchise has finally unveiled a good first look at its cast and action. The movie, directed by Eli Roth and produced by Avi Arad, is set to release later this year.

The 10 second teaser trailer released on Twitter/X gives a nice little taste of the film’s action, which certainly feels authentically “Borderlands-y”, for want of a better word. We see Lilith (played by Cate Blanchett) and Roland (played by Kevin Hart) firing guns and a shot of a suitably fearsome giant alien monster. There are also teases of the rest of the main cast, which includes Florian Munteanu as Kreig, Jack Black as Claptrap, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis and Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina.
The Borderlands film, despite snagging a stellar cast, has not has the smoothest of productions following its announcement 9 years ago. Principal photography finished back in 2021, with reshoots helmed by Terminator: Dark Fate director Tim Miller in early 2023. Last year, there were reports that Craig Mazin, one of the creative forces behind the acclaimed The Last of Us TV adaptation with HBO, had taken his name off the film as a screenwriter and opting to be credited under a pseudonym instead, which doesn’t exactly suggest great things for the film’s quality.
That said, anything can be good; Jack Black was recently one of the leads in the most successful video game movie adaptation in the world, and the rest of the cast are a fantastic collection of successful and award-winning actors and talented up-and-comers. We will see more of it quite soon when the full trailer is unveiled tomorrow ahead of the movie’s full release on the 9th of August 2024.
