One of the announcements as part of the Ubisoft Forward 2024 presentation was an update regarding one of the publisher’s most troubled games of late, the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake. The remake of the classic 2003 platformer was originally announced nearly four years ago, and finally has a new release window after an indefinite delay. We now know for certain that it isn’t coming out anytime soon.
As per a very brief notification on Ubisoft’s website, “Critically acclaimed Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is coming back! Release Date: 2026“. This comes after years of turbulent development, involving delays, more delays and a full developer switch from the India-based Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai to Ubisoft Montréal in Canada. Notably, Ubisoft Montréal was also the studio that developed the original game over 20 years ago. Despite how long the game has been in various states of production, the studio has still not released any gameplay footage aside from vague teaser trailers, including the latest one below announcing the new 2026 release window.
At any rate, despite its troubled initial years of development, Ubisoft seems confident that Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is back on the right track. As per a recent blog post, the publisher confirmed that the game is “now entering its full production phase“. The post also confirms that the game’s development is being supported by additional Ubisoft studios in Toronto, Bucharest, Paris, and Pune.
The 2003 original game was a critically acclaimed and revolutionary platformer, engaging players with its well-written characters and fun time-manipulation gameplay. It will remain to be seen if the sheer amount of time this game has been in the works will make it worth the wait when it eventually releases on modern platforms in two years.
