Rockstar Games has announced that its 2010 cowboy sandbox game Red Dead Redemption is finally arriving on PC. This confirmation comes about a year after releasing on PS4 and Nintendo Switch and after years of being exclusive to the PS3 and Xbox 360. The PC port, which was developed in collaboration with Double Eleven, will include some PC-exclusive features, as well as come bundled the Undead Nightmare expansion.
Not simply a barebones port, Red Dead Redemption on PC will include several improvements to bring the 14 year old game up to modern standards. These include a native 4K resolution at up to 144hz, if your hardware can handle it, as well as monitor support for both Ultrawide (21:9) and Super Ultrawide (32:9) and HDR10 support. Naturally, there will also be full keyboard and mouse support. Other PC-exclusive bells and whistles include support for NVIDIA DLSS 3.7 and AMD FSR 3.0 upscaling technologies, NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation, adjustable draw distances, shadow quality settings, and more.
It’s unclear why it has taken so long for this acclaimed title to make its way to PC. However, both Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto V had delayed releases on PC. As such, it seems that starting with a console exclusive release and rolling out an enhanced PC version later down the track is the studio’s preferred strategy. Considering the technical issues that the Grand Theft Auto Remastered Trilogy experienced in its launch, particularly on PC, delaying the PC port to ensure it releases in the best possible condition is perhaps a canny move.
Fittingly for a release which comes bundled with a zombie horror-themed expansion, Red Dead Redemption will release right in time for Halloween on October 29th 2024 on Steam, Epic Games Store and the Rockstar Games Store.
