We have finally received a look at Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming animated anthology series Secret Level. Inspired by popular video games, the show will feature episodes based on gaming franchises big and small, such as God of War, Sifu, Armored Core and…erm…Concord. I’m sure that particular adaptation seemed like a safer bet before the game was abruptly cancelled shortly after it came out.
Produced by Amazon’s MGM Studio as well as Tim Miller’s Blur Studio, which was behind the similar animated sci-fi anthology series Love, Death and Robots for Netflix, the show will feature 15 episodes, with each episode focusing on a different game property (or tabletop RPG property in the case of Dungeons and Dragons). Unlike Love, Death and Robots, which utilised different animation studios (and art styles) for each episode, all of Secret Level’s episodes will be handled by the same animation team.
The list of franchises featured are quite varied, ranging from foundational characters like Pac-Man and Mega Man to indie darlings like Spelunky and Sifu to recent releases like Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. The inclusion of a Concord episode definitely dates the show’s production to back when Sony thought it would be a big hit. The ill-fated multiplayer hero shooter’s spotlight episode may be the last piece of Concord media we ever receive after Firewalk Studios was recently shut down and any hopes of the game being revived were dashed.
The trailer also confirms a surprisingly star-studded voice cast. In addition to veteran voice actor Laura Bailey, the show will include some serious Hollywood talent. The big name voices featuring in Secret Level will include Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt and Shadow the Hedgehog himself, Keanu Reeves. It’s a little unclear which characters they will be voicing and if we will see any voice actors from the respective game properties reprising their roles, but it definitely suggests that Amazon is putting some serious money and effort behind the series.
With Amazon’s live action Fallout show definitely exceeding expectations, hopes are high that they will knock this ambitious animated anthology series out of the park. Amazon will be sharing exclusive episode specific content drops on the Secret Level social media channels from the 18th of November to give closer looks at how each game will be adapted. We will find out for ourselves when Secret Level releases on Prime Video on the 10th of December 2024.
